It’s funny how we craft the world into an image, don’t you think? This scene reminded me of that sometimes overreaching tendency, with its spiral floral lamp, painted electrical box, yellow flowers and literal brick road. It’s not unlike the road to Oz, or Disneyland. I grew up in Southern California—a place that’s arguably the most crafted, shaped and painted on Earth—and it makes me wonder whether others in lesser ‘shaped’ places long for more, or less of that.
