The Ways

All the different creative practices that I enjoy share at least one thing in common; that the work tends to be better when it flows out naturally instead of being forced. For me, this has been true for poetry, music, illustration, fine art, design and photography.

I think this snap is a great example of that. For my first roll of 35mm film since 2004, I liked five of the 37 total shots. This might be the best of those five, and from memory, this was kind of snapped in passing, as an afterthought, without much framing or anything else being consciously attended.

Why is creative work like this? Maybe it’s because creativity is inherently instinctual, and our conscious minds don’t have as much access to those instincts as our unconscious does.
